Maybe I'm too much into semantics, but I really like to think syntax is about expressing semantics through implying some more semantics...
Ex.:
Smoking is bad (blah blah blah).
It is bad for your health (yada yada yada).
Moreover, it can also do harm to the folks around (gna gna gna).
...don't you tell me it's connecting sentences, for good's sake...
