One of my colleagues used to say: ''theoretical syntax is like sex: it has practical applications, but that's not why we do it''.

Now, come on.

Maybe I'm too much into semantics, but I really like to think syntax is about expressing semantics through implying some more semantics...

Ex.:
Smoking is bad (blah blah blah).
It is bad for your health (yada yada yada).
Moreover, it can also do harm to the folks around (gna gna gna).

...don't you tell me it's connecting sentences, for good's sake...

should there be a pragmatic frame for epistemic connectives? common ground Grice-like stuff.
